Comics Previews for 7/15/2020
1. My Little Pony Friendship is Magic FCBD by Jeremy Whitley and Trish Forstner; FREE!
I like to mention kids comics because they are so important to the overall market (just look at the Bookscan numbers, as reported by Brian Hibbs!) Also, apparently since Free Comic Book Day was cancelled we get Free Comic Book Summer, which is cool I guess. This week this one and X-Men and Power Rangers books are out, along with a couple of others. I have no idea how many retailers are going to go for this – they typically still have to purchase the books, but perhaps that is not the case this year.
2. Strange Adventures no. 3 by Tom King, Mitch Gerads, and Doc Shaner; $4.99
This is very much the spiritual successor to King and Gerad’s Mister Miracle run and it’s been great so far. I'd call it an exploration of what is true and real in the midst of the “fog of war,” and what could be more important to be thinking about right now than that??! the art is also beautiful. They pull off the “two different artists with very different styles” thing and one podcaster said this is really a chance to expose a wider audience to the work of Doc Shaner, which is great!
3. Dark Nights Death Metal no. 2 by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo; $4.99
4. Snake Eyes Deadgame no. 1 by Rob Liefeld and Chad Bowers; $4.99
I gotta talk about these two together because they are equally ridiculous! First, Dark Night Death Metal by Snyder and Capullo. Nice to get our yearly dose of these two fellas. Last year was Batman Last Knight on Earth and before that was the first Dark Nights Metal. This here is the sequel to Dark Nights Metal and you can expect a thin veneer of plot and lots of bombastic and outlandash art and delightfully absurd over–the-top characters.
Speaking of which, Rob Leifeld is back, baby! And he’s single-handedly bringing G.I. Joe back from the brink! Ok, probably not, but he gets props for trying! It’s 2020 and hating on Rob Liefeld is OUT! Mad props to Rob Liefeld is IN! He explains the premise of this book over on the Cartoonist Kayfabe Youtube channel: Snakeyes was the first character in popular culture to carry a katana AND a firearm. What more needs to be said, really?!
5. Immortal Hulk no. 35 by Al Ewing and Mike Hawthorne
There is not much more to say about this series, either. If you want the definitive description, the first omnibus has a great intro by Jeff Lemire that says it all. Immortal Hulk is a great on-going series by a dedicated creative team, which is a rare thing. Great Alex Ross covers as well!
6. Empyre no. 1 by Al Ewing, Dan Slott, and Valerio Schiti; $5.99
Speaking of Al Ewing…Empyre is Marvel’s big, annual crossover. I am really not into these, but it’s cool that Marvel is handing the reigns to Mr. Ewing and co. We’ll see what he can do.
7. Space Riders Vortex of Darkness no. 2 by Carlos Giffoni and Alexis Ziritt
Haven’t seen much from Black Mask Studios these days. They seem pretty much defunct, but they do have some material still outstanding, and it’s nice to see this coming out.
8. Sacred Six no. 1 by Christopher Priest and Gabriel Ibarra with cover by Jae Lee
This one is worth calling out just for those names. Christopher Priest is a legendary creator. Been in the game a long time and it’s nice to see some new stuff from him. Jae Lee’s been doing a lot of covers for Dynamite, and a lot of them look really cool. Of course, his is like one of 10 ten covers. They really like the variants over there at Dynamite! I’m really impressed by the main artist, Gabrie Ibarra, as well. As for concept and plot, the Sacred Six is an all-female team book spinning out of Vampirella. Takes place in Georgia and seems to have a bit of a Southern Gothic vibe. You heard it here, folks, this is a hot book!
9. Red Mother no. 6 by Jeremy Haun and Dany Luckert
Boom Studios’ OTHER horror book. It’s been described as “the one where nobody really knows what’s going on,” which sounds about right. It’s been just creepy and mysterious enough to stay interesting, so it should be worth following along as the main character gets further sucked into whatever it is she is getting sucked into.
10. Red Sonja and Vampirella meet Betty and Veronica no. 11 by Amy Chu and Maria Sanapo
Finally! It is finally here! Confession time: I am not actually reading this book. Perhaps it is time to lay this joke to rest, but I just can’t resist. The truth is, it’s probably worth reading! If I can get it free on Hoopla I will totally check it out and report back!
Also, as always, I will call out some of the more expensive books out this week.
First and foremost, super huge congratulations to Erik Larsen for reaching issue number 250 of Savage Dragon!!! It’s quite an accomplishment, and I hope everyone goes out and buys this book to recognize this achievement and support Mr. Larsen, who seems like a great guy!
I
mentioned Black Mask. They’ve been a channel for some great new talent and
Maria Llovet certainly fits that description. I believe she is a French artist,
and her work is certainly not for kids, but it is sublime! Her OGN Loud is out in trade paperback edition this week.
Also out, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Comic Book Archive by Evan Dorkin. No irony here, Evan Dorkin’s a great chartoonist and it’s cool to see his Bill & Ted comics getting a new printing.
That’s all I’ve got for this
week. Don’t forget to check out The Comics Shop over at
Bookshop.org/shop/comics. It features curated lists of ready-to-ship graphic
novels and trade paperbacks. I only get 5% of the proceeds.
You can also email me at WinMorrGames@gmail.com. Thanks for reading! Read more comics; stay safe and healthy; and I will see you next week!
