Comics Previews for 7/8/2020
Once again, I'm here to offer a quick take on a small sampling of new single-issue comics coming out on New Comic Book Day. This is the weekly top ten for Wednesday, July 8 (with DC books out a day earlier on Tuesday, July 7).
1.
DC Classics Batman Adventures no. 2 by Kelley
Puckett and Ty Templeton; $1.99
There are several Batman books out this week. We’ve got no. 94 from the main ongoing series, Batman the Adventures Continue no. 2, Batman’s
Grave no. 8 and Detective Comics no. 1023. But the pick of the week goes to the
reprint of Batman Adventures no. 2 featuring art by Ty Templeton. It’s
only a dollar ninety-nine, and if you missed it the first time around, way back
in the early 90’s, now’s your chance to pick it up. It’s great that DC is carrying
forward the DC Animated Universe with Batman the Adventures Continue, but this
one gets the nod for the fabulous price and for the nostalgia.
2.
Usagi Yojimbo Color Classics no. 4 by Stan Sakai
Speaking of nostalgia and reprint comics, Stan Sakai and colorist Ronda
Pattison have been killing it on this series that is a great jumping on point
for anyone who was curious about Usagi but hadn’t taken the plunge. It’s probably
great for long-time fans as well! This issue continues the story of Usagi’s
early days as a Samurai.
3.
Ginseng Roots no. 5 by Craig Thompson; $6.00
This series gets my highest recommendation for anyone who has any
interest at all in indie single issue comics or the graphic memoir genre. Thompson
masterfully weaves together another chapter of his memoirs (building on Blankets to some extent, but with an altogether different tone) and a love letter to single
issue comics.
4.
Something is Killing the Children no. 8 by James
Tynion IV and Werther Dell’Edera
Maybe the best on-going horror series right now, although there is some
stiff competition. The story and the monsters draw you in, but the character design -- Erica Slaughter in particular -- along with the mystery and intrigue are what sticks with you. I think
the next couple of issues are going to really set the tone going forward.
5.
Ash & Thorn no. 2 by Mariah McCourt and Soo
Lee
Speaking of monster hunters…the two older adult heroines are back for
more. Sadly I missed the first issue. I’m not sure I’ll hop on just yet, but I
love the concept!
6.
Bitter Root no. 9 by David Walker, Chuck Brown &
Sanford Greene
The Eisner-nominated series about the Sangerye family of monster hunters
continues!
7.
X-Men God Loves Man Kills Extended Cut no. 1 by
Chris Claremont and Brent Anderson; $4.99
It's great to see this reprint of an important piece of 80s X-men continuity. Apparently there are some new additions by Claremont and Anderson, hence the "extended cut."
8.
Sabrina Something Wicked no. 2 by Kelly Thompson
and Veronica Fish
Veronica Fish’s art is gorgeous! Archie Comics has reprinted the first
issue in the series, so if you missed it, you can still pick that one up, and
this new one as well!
9.
DCeased Dead Planet no. 1 by Tom Taylor and
Trevor Hairsine; $4.99
Everybody is loving Tom Taylor right now. The DCeased saga continues with
Dead Planet.
10. Doom Patrol Weight of the Worlds no. 7 by Gerard
Way and Nick Derington
This
is the final issue of Gerard Way’s Doom Patrol. If you haven’t gotten the chance
to check out his interview over at the Cartoonist Kayfabe Youtube channel, I
highly recommend it. The Young Animal books have been hit or miss, but I’m
really curious to see what Mr. Way and co. come up with next. Also, Nick
Derington is amazing!
Supergirl: Being Super TP new edition by Mariko Tamaki, Sandu Florea & Joelle Jones; $16.99
Bowie Stardust Rayguns & Moon-age Daydreams 2nd Edition; $39.99 (1,000 copy limited run)
Jack Kirby Epic Life of the King of Comics HC; $28.99
